On April 10, 1919, Benson was sent to the infirmary due to an illness during the Spanish Flu pandemic. She received a note of absence on the 10th, which was the day of field day events. The next day, she received a letter addressed to "Miss Laura Quayle" by a teacher. This letter read, "Dear Sweetie, Can't you find any other way to spend your time than being sick- you must hurry and come back down- we miss you. I am so happy, i hardly know whether I'm on this earth or not. Can you guess why? Well I just can't keep it I had the "darlingest" letter from Claude (my own sweet little boy) yesterday afternoon. He is going home Easter and wants a date Sunday PM. Now what do you know about that? Hace you gotten your permit to go home with me, you know we will leave next Fri. Think on it. hurry and get well, I want to see you already so soon."
