Camping at Camp Flastacowo

Florida State College of Women faculty and staff purchase six acres of land near Lake Bradford in 1915. It was named by the Student Government Association "Camp Flastacowo", which is an abbreviation for the Florida State College for Women. This camp allows kids of different ages to come together and enjoy outdoor activities. While participating in these outdoor activities these children build up more confidence, become more accepting, and create more of an understanding and love of the outdoors.

Weekends at Camp Flastacowo

Florida State College of Women girls would let loose for a weekend with chaperones and teachers. The fun started when the truck left the campus at five o'clock Saturday afternoon and continued until it returned Monday morning at 8:20am. They found that they could do as many things as roasting hot dogs, canoeing, singing on the dock, dancing the Virginia reel, and after everyone was finally in bed, serenading the chaperones, all in one evening. On Sunday nights, they would have a big camp fire and roast marshmallows since there was a cold wind from the north of Lake Bradford. At 5:30, alarm clocks would go off as it was time to get get up. Everyone would pile out, looking very sleepy and bewildered. By the time the beds were all stacked up, and the floors were swept, the sun had come up and the lake would look like a blue mirror reflecting the white clouds and the dark trees. Breakfast would usually consist of bread or toast and mayonnaise. After that, the truck would pick everyone up with their baggage and they would cheer in hopes that they could all come back again soon.

Even Party at Camp Flastacowo

The Even team would take their own retreats together at Camp Flastacowo. Among the outstanding features of camp life here was the fancy backdive by Cornelia Colson, who was nominated for the Olympic team by her teammates, and the scintilating syncopation of Nancy Hoyt and Lucy Lang of the swim team. One of the most solemn events taking place during the stay at the camp was the conferring of the D. D. degree upon Miss "Fairy", a chaperone. This means that people would receive their Doctor of Divinity here, which is an advanced or honorary degree in Divinity, usually recognizable as a religious degree. The two chaperones Miss "Fairy" and Miss Meek, in spite of the odds against them set by others, proved to be excellent chaperones. The Evens had amazing camaraderie, which they celebrating at Camp Flastacowo, much like many other groups of people seeking to have a fun experience near campus.

Camp Flastacowo: Now

The Reservation, formerly known as Camp Flastacowo, is deeply rooted in the history of Florida State University. This waterfront park and conference center has been a gem for the university and community since 1920. The vision was to acquire waterfront property southwest of campus to provide a pristine recreational water feature for FSU students to come and relax and socialize in a healthy outdoor environment. The Rez continues to thrive through FSU’s Campus Recreation Department. The Reservation continues to offer outstanding recreational programming that our predecessors envisioned by offering low- and high-challenge ropes programming, open rec hours, a 35-foot climbing wall, outdoor pursuits, adventure trips and the waterfront activities of canoeing, kayaking and sailing. And Camp Flastacowo continues to promote outdoor adventure programming for youngsters in our community. There is even a summer camp held every summer here. Tallahassee’s only ACA-accredited summer day camp, Camp Flastacowo is located at the FSU Reservation, a 73-acre waterfront facility located on beautiful Lake Bradford.  Campers participate in activities that include water safety, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, arts and crafts, swimming, challenge courses, team building, climbing wall and outdoor education. The FSU Reservation, serves as home base for Camp Flastacowo’s Explorer Camp. Campers will be exposed to a variety of outdoor activities during eight one-week sessions, operating Monday through Friday from 8:30 am until 4:00 pm. Campers will split their time exploring some of North Florida’s outdoor recreation opportunities and exploring their inner abilities as leaders in a Summer Camp setting.
